For many years, I thought i wasn’t a very good yoga teacher because I was not good at meditation.......⁠
⁠
Maybe you’ve felt that way too.....⁠

But what I learned after a LOT of learning and studying and trying different styles of meditation is that I wanted to be good at it.⁠
⁠
I heard about all the benefits ....⁠
⁠
Reduces Stress and Anxiety 🧘‍♀️🌿⁠
Improves Focus and Clarity 🧠✨⁠
Enhances Emotional Well-being 💖😊⁠
Promotes Better Sleep 😴🌙⁠
⁠
Who doesn’t want that?⁠
⁠
AND that I was a yoga teacher so I should at least be able to meditate well (whatever that means)⁠

But here’s the thing........⁠

I was forcing it....⁠
⁠
I was forcing my mind to be quiet.....okay maybe willing it...⁠
⁠
and surprise surprise ...⁠
⁠
it wasn’t working.⁠
⁠
Here’s the thing, you don’t have to sit cross legged nor be completely still.⁠
⁠
Sometimes, the most powerful meditative practice is simply taking yourself for a walk. 🌞✨⁠
⁠

One of the hardest and greatest skills I’ve ever

One of the hardest and greatest skills I’ve ever learnt is active listening.⁣
⁣
I’m by no means perfect at it but it is something I try to engage in every class I teach, in every conversation I have.⁣
⁣
I believe that we should all learn how to listen….really listen.⁣
⁣
I know you’ve been there, In that deep conversation with someone and their eyes gloss over……⁣
⁣
Or it feels like they are beyond you or right through you…⁣
⁣
They are doing all the things, nodding, mmhmming….⁣
⁣
But they aren’t actually listening ⁣
⁣
There are so many reasons so many variable as to why we tap out - why they stop listening …that’s not what this post is about…⁣
⁣
⁣
It’s about taking the time to listen to all that is said and unsaid.⁣
⁣
To get out of our own way, our own heads, our own thoughts and feelings and to truly listen to the person in front of us…⁣
⁣
To let go of the desire to offer advice, to fix, to change, to disagree…⁣
⁣
But to just listen⁣
⁣
And let them be heard…⁣
⁣
I’m sure you’ve met those people and how much better you felt when someone actually stopped to just listen…⁣
⁣
I had that experience today…⁣
⁣
She held my hand, looked me in the eyes and listened and acknowledged she understood everything that I was saying.⁣
⁣
She held space for me to be heard …⁣
⁣
And that was exactly what I needed.⁣
⁣
I didn’t need advice, or opinions…I needed someone to listen to me…⁣
⁣
I invite you when you sit down tonight to have dinner with someone you love….just listen⁣
⁣
Put the devices away….⁣
⁣
Put the advice away….⁣
⁣
And listen….⁣
⁣
Don’t respond with tips, tricks or even your own story …⁣
⁣
Just listen.⁣
⁣
And acknowledge you understand exactly what they are saying⁣
⁣
Whether or not you agree, think it’s rational or not…doesn’t matter⁣
⁣
Just listen.⁣
⁣
Look them in the eyes…⁣
⁣
Put all of your attention into everything that is said and unsaid….⁣
⁣
And if needed sit in silence with them.⁣
⁣
That’s it…..⁣
⁣
And if you notice all those desires pop in to talk, to offer advice, to fix….spend some time journaling after as to why?⁣
⁣

I’m sharing a practice with you today that helped me navigate the overwhelm of my day. This is a practice that I revisit on a regular occasion, and while this is only a snippet - the full meditation is available in my 40 Day Meditation journey starting on November 22nd (link in bio).⁠

This morning, i had to drop my dog Macy off for a CT Scan. The drop off did not go as well as planned and after I left her I needed a few moments to pause, to get myself back into my body and the easiest way I have ever found to do that is by connecting to my breath.⁠
⁠
So take 30 seconds, and notice your breath with me. 💫⁠
⁠
Notice the very moment the inhale begins....how it continues.....and the moment it ends.....⁠
⁠
Notice the very moment the exhale begins....how it continues.....and the moment it ends.....⁠
⁠
Keep your attention through one complete cycle of breath. 🌿🤍⁠
⁠
See if you can sustain your attention to the breath ......for just one breath....⁠
⁠
and then another complete cycle of breath....⁠
⁠
and then another.⁠
⁠
Repeat as needed. ⁠
⁠
