For the last several years, I’ve been hosting a new years day practice at Epic Yoga. This will be the second year we mark this new year by gathering to practice 108 Sun Salutations.
I personally don’t believe that January 1st requires us to become a new version of ourselves but there is something meaningful about beginning the year by committing to our practice.
108 is a significant number across yoga and several Indian spiritual traditions. It appears in many places, including the 108 beads traditionally found on a mala and practices of mantra, meditation, and devotion. There are different interpretations of its significance rather than one simple explanation for why 108 matters.
The practice of moving through 108 Sun Salutations has become a way for many yoga communities to honour transitions and gather in shared practice.
And then there is the experience of actually doing it.
A Sun Salutation is relatively simple and familiar. But repeat it again and again and your relationship with it begins to change.
At first, you may be thinking about the movements. Eventually, repetition creates a rhythm. You begin to notice your breath, your energy, your thoughts, your resistance, and the choices you’re making along the way.
Maybe you discover you have more capacity than you expected.
Maybe you notice the impulse to keep going simply because everyone else is.
Maybe your practice that morning is knowing when to rest.
That is part of the 108 too.
There is no prize for completing every round, and completing fewer doesn’t make the practice less meaningful. You can modify, pause, rest, skip repetitions, or rejoin whenever you choose.
The 108 gives us a shared structure. What happens within that structure will be different for every person in the room.
So on the first day of 2027, we’ll gather again.
Not to resolve to be better.
To move. To breathe. To pay attention. To practice alongside one another.
And perhaps to begin another year remembering that practice isn’t something we complete. It’s something we return to.

Alison Réaume has spent nearly two decades teaching yoga and exploring what happens when the practice becomes about more than getting the poses “right.”
As a yoga teacher, teacher trainer, and somatic educator, she helps students develop a more curious and connected relationship with their practice, while supporting yoga teachers in becoming more thoughtful, adaptable, and confident in the way they teach.
Her work brings together movement, somatic awareness, philosophy, breath, self-study, and a belief that yoga should make room for the person practicing it.
Alison offers classes, workshops, retreats, 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, and continuing education for yoga teachers throughout the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver, along with online learning opportunities.
