Whether you’re stepping onto a yoga mat for the first time or you’ve been practicing for years and want to better understand what you’re doing, Yoga 101 gives us four weeks to slow the practice down and explore the foundations.
Regular classes don’t always leave much room to stop and ask questions. Where should I feel this pose? What is alignment actually for? Why does one version feel completely different in my body than another? When should I use a prop? What am I supposed to be doing with my breath?
Over four weeks, we’ll take familiar parts of a yoga practice and spend more time with them.
We’ll explore common poses and transitions, different approaches to alignment, and how props and variations can help you find options that make sense for your body. You’ll learn how poses relate to one another and begin making your own choices rather than worrying about whether you’re doing something “right.”
We’ll also move beyond asana to explore two other foundational practices: pranayama and meditation. You’ll be introduced to approachable breathing and meditation practices, with time to experience them and understand how they can become part of your own practice.
And because this is a four-week series, there’s room to stop, experiment, ask questions, and revisit things instead of rushing into the next pose.
Come because yoga is completely new to you, because you want to feel more comfortable in regular classes, or because you’ve been practicing for years and would like to revisit the foundations with fresh eyes.
Meditation + awareness: Approachable meditation practices and opportunities to develop greater attention to what you’re experiencing throughout your practice.s. Plenty of room to explore.
Asana + movement: Common poses and transitions, functional alignment, props, variations, and ways to adapt the physical practice to your body.
Breath + pranayama: The relationship between breath and movement, foundational breathing practices, and different ways pranayama can be explored.

Alison Réaume has spent nearly two decades teaching yoga and exploring what happens when the practice becomes about more than getting the poses “right.”
As a yoga teacher, teacher trainer, and somatic educator, she helps students develop a more curious and connected relationship with their practice, while supporting yoga teachers in becoming more thoughtful, adaptable, and confident in the way they teach.
Her work brings together movement, somatic awareness, philosophy, breath, self-study, and a belief that yoga should make room for the person practicing it.
Alison offers classes, workshops, retreats, 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, and continuing education for yoga teachers throughout the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver, along with online learning opportunities.
